A 32 year old female presents to General Practice reporting of feeling persistently sad and fatigued for the past 2 months. She describes a loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, including reading and spending time with friends. She has been experiencing difficulty concentrating at work and has been missing deadlines. Her appetite has decreased, losing 5 pounds unintentionally. She also reports waking up around 4am and being unable to fall back asleep. There is no history of any manic episodes. She attributes her symptoms to increased stress at work but notes that she no longer finds joy in things even outside of work. She states she feels she can’t talk to anyone about this because she “doesn’t want to burden anyone.” She reports her mother has suffered from depression.
